Latest provincial drought report paints dry picture for Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast

The province has released its latest drought and water scarcity bulletin, with data current to June 18.

The report shows East Vancouver Island, from the Campbell River area to Greater Victoria, is at Level 4 on the drought severity index, with Level 5 the most severe.

The South Coast, including the Sunshine Coast, and West Vancouver Island — from Port Renfrew to Port Hardy — are at Level 3.

Forecasters said Stage 3 water restrictions are in place in several Vancouver Island regions, while most hydrometric stations along the west coast are reporting record low flows for this time of year.

The forecast calls for warm, dry weather to persist across southern B.C. over the next several days, which could worsen drought conditions.

“Northern B.C. is expected to benefit from forecasted precipitation, which may help limit drought onset, while southern B.C. is likely to experience worsening drought conditions due to continued warm and dry weather,” said the report.

The province also released its final snow survey and water supply bulletin for the season, with data current to June 15.

It shows snowpack levels on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast are at zero per cent of seasonal averages, while the provincial average sits at 48 per cent.

That report said low snowpack has contributed to drought concerns, particularly on Vancouver Island and the South Coast.
