The first of four new Island Class ferries has arrived in British Columbia.
BC Ferries said Island xwsaĺux̌ul is expected to enter service this summer between Nanaimo Harbour and Gabriola Island after completing final testing and crew training. The vessel travelled from Damen Shipyards in Romania and will replace Island Kwigwis on the route.
“This is about far more than introducing a new vessel. It’s about strengthening relationships, supporting the inter-island connections coastal communities rely on every day and continuing the work of reconciliation through meaningful action,” said Nicolas Jimenez, president and CEO of BC Ferries.
“We are deeply honoured that Snuneymuxw First Nation has gifted the name xwsaĺux̌ul to this vessel. Receiving a hul’q’umi’num’ name is both a privilege and a profound responsibility. It reflects the trust and relationship we continue to build together with Snuneymuxw and our commitment to advancing reconciliation in partnership with Indigenous communities. For this we are truly grateful.”
Island Kwigwis will be temporarily redeployed between Campbell River and Quadra Island this summer before becoming a relief vessel for the four new ferries during refits.
BC Ferries said the new Island Class vessels will collectively provide a 71 per cent increase in vehicle capacity and a 135 per cent increase in passenger capacity on the routes they serve.
The vessels are battery-equipped diesel hybrids and are designed to operate entirely on electric power once shore-based charging infrastructure is available.
When all four new vessels enter service, BC Ferries plans to introduce two-ship service between Crofton and Vesuvius Bay.
