Road Safety at Work kicks off work-zone traffic safety campaign

With warmer weather bringing more road construction to Vancouver Island highways, a provincewide campaign is reminding drivers to stay alert in work zones.

According to Road Safety at Work, 11 people were killed and 263 injured while working along B.C. roads between 2016 and 2025.

“Work zones are complex, fast-changing environments. If drivers lose focus even for a moment, they can miss critical cues. And that’s when people get hurt,” said Trace Acres, spokesperson for the annual Work Zone Safety campaign.

RCMP Highway Patrol partnered with Road Safety at Work to launch the enforcement campaign at a work zone in Surrey this week.

A news release said officers issued tickets for distracted driving and stopped an impaired driver, six unlicensed drivers and five uninsured motorists.

“A moment of distraction behind the wheel can have devastating consequences in work zones. Slowing down, staying alert and putting your phone away are simple actions that can prevent serious injuries and save lives,” said Todd McDonald, head of prevention services at WorkSafeBC.
