City extends lease for supportive housing facility on Labieux Road

Residents of a temporary housing site on Labieux Road in Nanaimo will be able to remain there until September next year.

The City of Nanaimo said it needs the site at 2060 Labieux Rd. for a future public works yard project and has agreed to extend its lease with B.C. Housing to allow time to relocate residents.

“City council understands the importance of maintaining stability for Nikao residents while longer-term housing solutions are identified,” Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog said. “Extending the lease for this site reflects the city’s commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals and ensures that our partners have additional time to plan and transition residents into appropriate housing in the community.”

A city news release said B.C. Housing and the facility’s operator, Pacifica Housing Advisory Association, will develop a closure plan. Residents could be relocated to other supportive housing units, or to market or subsidized housing.

“We will continue to work together, with Nanaimo and other community partners, as we move toward long-term housing solutions,” Housing and Municipal Affairs Minister Christine Boyle said. “We’re focused on bringing people indoors, and helping them stay indoors, with access to the supports they need to stabilize their lives, and to build a stronger, safer community for everyone.”
