IIO investigates alleged self-harm while woman was under arrest in Nanaimo

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is seeking witnesses after a woman was injured while being arrested in Nanaimo.

Nanaimo RCMP officers responded to a disturbance outside a building on Boxwood Road shortly after 6 p.m. on Feb. 2. A news release from the Independent Investigations Office said officers took a woman who was allegedly impaired into custody.

“At around 6:45 p.m., BC Emergency Health Services was called to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment after officials noticed the woman had suffered an injury,” the news release said. “Police reported the woman’s injury was the result of self-harm, which may have occurred while she was in the back of the police vehicle.”

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment and the Independent Investigations Office was notified.

The office reviews incidents when someone suffers an injury that may meet the threshold of serious harm and there is a possible connection to police action or inaction.

The Independent Investigations Office is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that may assist investigators to contact its witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or use the contact form on its website.
