RDN works to secure $7.5 million more to complete Hamilton Marsh purchase

The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking additional funding to complete the purchase of Hamilton Marsh.

The RDN agreed to buy the 360-hectare property from Mosaic Forest Management for $30 million. The purchase is expected to be finalized in March.

The regional district has a contribution agreement with the Nanaimo and Area Land Trust and memorandums of understanding with the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region and the Hamilton Wetlands and Forest Preservation Society. It still needs to secure $7.5 million from other sources by Jan. 30 to complete the purchase.

“The RDN is grateful to the individuals, businesses and organizations who have already pledged their generous support and to the future donors who will help us reach our $7.5 million goal,” said Stuart McLean, RDN board chair. “Together, we can preserve this ecologically significant area for the benefit of the many species that rely on Hamilton Marsh for their survival and for the enjoyment of generations of RDN residents and people beyond our region.”

If the RDN secures the funding and meets all conditions of the purchase, Hamilton Marsh will become a regional park and conservation area.
