Mountain biker’s legacy carries on with funding of new pump track in Cedar

Cedar is getting a new pump track thanks to a donation from the Stevie Smith Legacy Foundation.

The Regional District of Nanaimo announced the new project today and says the foundation will fund the design and installation of the new track beside the Cedar skatepark on Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools District land.

“The Stevie Smith Legacy Foundation is excited to partner with the RDN to bring our next project to fruition, a pump track located in the heart of Cedar where BMX found its humble beginnings. Also next to Cedar High school where Stevie himself graduated,” said Michelle Corfield, director of the Stevie Smith Legacy Foundation. “The entire foundation is extremely excited to get shovels in the ground.”

Construction is anticipated to start next year and the RDN says a preliminary concept plan has been created, which will be refined into the final design.

The RDN will manage and maintain the pump track after it has been constructed and the cost will be funded through the electoral Area A Community Parks and Halls operating budget.

The Stevie Smith Legacy Foundation was created to honour the legacy of mountain biker Stevie Smith, who grew up in Cassidy and died in 2016 at the age of 26.
