Nanaimo sees spike in theft from vehicles

Nanaimo RCMP are warning of a large spike in thefts from vehicles.

According to a news release, there have been 265 reported thefts so far this year and there were 175 total in 2024.

“Many of these thefts are from unlocked vehicles. As we know, these incidents are highly preventable but continue to happen on a regular basis,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien.

Police say some items most taken are tools, license plates, wallets, phone and cash.

“In the past sixty days, 29 vehicles that were left unlocked had items stolen from them,” the news release says. “Also, the same number had windows smashed to allow for entry.”

RCMP suggest locking doors and considering an alarm system if your vehicle does not have one. It is also important to remove valuables or keep them out of sight.
