Federal Government announces $7 million for Ravensong Aquatic Centre project

Ahead of the April 5 referendum, the federal government has announced funding towards the Ravensong Aquatic Centre expansion project.

Federal Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities Nathaniel Erskine-Smith made the announcement Wednesday along with the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN).

Erskine-Smith said the government recognizes the importance of community spaces and remain committed to strengthening them across Canada.

“This investment in green community infrastructure will ensure more families in the Oceanside area have access to modern, inclusive, and sustainable recreation spaces for years to come.”

The project cost is estimated at $36 million, with $6 million coming from capital reserves.

Next month’s referendum looked to long-term borrow the remaining $30 million, with the RDN now saying the federal investment will provide a financial buffer during the shifting economic period.

The project will double the size of the facility with a new pool area and modernized change rooms a key highlight.

The funding is through the government’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program.
