Two Nanaimo RCMP officers bear sprayed during arrest of axe-wielding man

A weekend arrest of a man in causing a disturbance led to two officers being bear sprayed.

On Saturday, March 15 at around 4:30 p.m., RCMP were called to Aulds Road near Metral Drive on a report of a man seen throwing an axe into the back of a passing truck.

Officers recognized the man as 40-year-old Kym Arkell, who had previous outstanding arrest warrants.

A chase ensued on foot after Arkell attempted to flee and he opened his backpack to bring out a can of bear spray and sprayed it at the officers.

The officers were able to arrest Arkell and were then treated by BCEHS for the effects suffered from the bear spray.
