The City of Nanaimo is warning everyone that venturing on the ice is dangerous and everyone should stay off.
Signs have been posted at all entrances to bodies of water warning everyone of the dangers, and risks that are associated with going on bodies of water in the city.
Residents are reminded to use the ice at city rinks for skating, never assume the ice is safe, never use the ice as a shortcut, and not to chase after pets or toys on the ice.
Mayor Leonard Krog says ice on lakes in Nanaimo is rare and tempting.
“Ice on our lakes is a rare occurrence and as tempting as it could be to venture out on what looks to be a frozen body of water, we ask that you choose to stay safe and avoid a potential accident,” he says.
If you happen to see an accident on the ice, or someone falling through, call 911 immediately.
