Nanaimo business leaders stand united against US tariffs

Tariffs have been put on hold, but the threat continues to remain and that’s why Nanaimo business leaders say they’re standing united and supporting local businesses.

President Donald Trump has suspended the 25 per cent tariffs, and partners like the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Nanaimo and the Nanaimo Prosperity Corporation say they’re advocating and supporting the local community to ensure steps are taken to help keep the city’s businesses sustainable and profitable.

“We’re working closely with our provincial and federal representatives to ensure that local voices are heard in ongoing trade discussions,” the chamber says.

According to a media release, there are several ways local businesses can reduce the impact of the tariffs, if they’re imposed, to keep themselves profitable including staying informed on upcoming discussions, following the industry updates, accessing provincial resources, and properly engage with US customers on the impacts of the tariffs.

The chamber says the threat this trade war can bring is very real and signifies challenges for businesses, but they’re not alone in this fight.

“Our organizations remain committed to advocating for our community, providing resources, and working with our partners to navigate this complex situation,” they say. “By staying informed, proactive and united we will continue moving forward together.”

According to the federal government, on Feb. 3, Trump decided to pause the 25 per cent tariffs on Canada for 30 days to allow the government to reinforce the border to slow down migration and the flow of Fentanyl.
