Driver flees scene after ramming police vehicles in Nanaimo, RCMP investigating

Nanaimo RCMP are looking for answers after a driver caused damage to multiple police cruisers.

The incident occurred Tuesday, January 28, around 7:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Southgate Mall on 12th Street.

Police described the vehicle as a white Ford pickup truck in the parking lot with the driver appearing to be slumped over the steering wheel.

RCMP couldn’t engage the vehicle to determine if the driver was impaired or in medical distress, as it began to move and attempted to leave the parking lot.

The truck pushed one RCMP vehicle out of its path and struck a second one, resulting in significant damage to both.

The vehicle then drove out of the parking lot at an excessive speed, at one point driving onto a pedestrian walkway in front of the Country Grocer, knocking over several displays of potted plants.

RCMP decided to not pursue the driver because of the speed they were driving and evidence displayed but last saw it driving southbound on the Trans-Canada Highway.

One of the vehicles struck was not drivable and was forced to be towed.

The man is described as a bald Caucasian man who was wearing a blue jacket.

Anyone who was in the area between 6:45 and 7:30 p.m. are asked to check their dashcam footage for any information that could help the Nanaimo RCMP with their investigation.
