Town of Gibsons opens tenure to build over 300 homes by 2034

Housing needs are expected to skyrocket in Gibsons over the next 10 years, and the town says to diversify the types of homes built to meet the growing demand.

According to town staff, they’re projecting 364 homes will be needed by 2034 across a wide range of tenures including multiplexes, row houses, and accessory dwellings to meet the town’s supply. This is why they’re hosting an Infill Housing Design Competition to help meet that growing need.

In a statement, the town says they’re opening the discussion to designers, builders, architects and other interested members of the public, but if they understand the Town of Gibsons housing context.

The competition will be divided into two categories for those looking to participate, including small lot (3-4 units) and long lot (5-6 units), and those interested should consult the requirements found in the IHDC Design Brief.

Winners of the design competition will be announced in the spring, and they could receive $2,500 for first place, $1,250 for second and $500 for third.

Contestants must have designs submitted by Mar. 10 and all ideas should be sent in PDF format and emailed to Jack Desante and should focus on affordability, cost-effectiveness, flexibility and creativity, inclusivity and livability as well as good neighbour design.
