A new scam is on the rise, and Sunshine Coast RCMP say people should be careful about responding to unknown text messages.
According to police, a Robert’s Creek resident reported the scam on Jan. 14 to the detachment after she was contacted to hand over $2,300 from someone claiming to be her son who had dropped his phone in the water.
RCMP say the text message asks the recipient to send the money by e-transfer to purchase a new phone, and since this a common scam everyone should be aware and report any unusual texts to police.
