New road intersection to open in Nanaimo next week

A new intersection will soon be open to traffic in Nanaimo.

The City says starting this week, traffic signal lights will start flashing for drivers along Bowen Road, with the traffic lights, crosswalks at the Bowen Road, Boxwood Road, and Beban Parkway intersection to officially open for traffic next week.

The intersection will provide safe access for cyclists and pedestrians.

The change is part of the ongoing Midtown Gateway Project, which is entering its last year of construction.

City mayor Leonard Krog says expanding the city’s transportation network is critical for the community.

“We’ve seen a lot of work on and around Bowen Road lately, thanks for your continued patience. The project end is in sight,” said Krog.

Changes from the new intersection include giving access to the new Beban Plaza Lane from Beban Parkway and having a safer exit from the plaza.

They hope these changes can improve access to Beban Park and the city’s transportation network through more options, safety and comfort for the community.

The lights will flash this Wednesday, with the intersection opening next Wednesday.
