City of Nanaimo forced back to the drawing board on public works yard

The City of Nanaimo has failed to secure electoral approval to borrow funds to build a new public works yard after voters turned in over 8,600 opposition forms.

The bylaw, if passed, would’ve allowed the city to borrow $90 million to build a replacement fleet maintenance building and crew/administration building to replace the current one at Labieux Road, which the city claims is no longer sufficient to meet the city’s needs.

According to a media release, council will now be presented with options on how they’ll proceed with the project next week.
