Funding for climate adaptation initiatives has been received by the Regional District of Nanaimo to help build a coastal strategy they say will help increase resiliency.
A total of $310,750 was given to the district by the federal government through Natural Resources Canada to help with climate change adaptation, and the district says they have every intention of working with all levels of government, members of the community and businesses to develop the strategy.
“The project will provide area local governments, First Nations, residents, and others with a collaborative way to address shared challenges, and the information needed to decide how to prepare for coastal climate change,” they say. “It will also support ongoing collaboration to act and show how other coastal regions could apply coordinated coastal climate action.”
Some of the areas the project will address include collecting data to address potential risks and vulnerability to climate change, co-development and collaboration of climate action between regional partners, and sharing outcomes and empowering property owners and residents to help prevent climate impacts.
The district says the project is currently underway and is expected to be completed in 2027.
