Quick action prevented a local man from getting his bank account drained by a Facebook Marketplace scammer.
Nanaimo RCMP say on October 18 they received a report of fraud. A man who had listed gym equipment for sale was contacted by a potential buyer, they agreed on a price and exchanged emails for an e-transfer. However, the buyer also asked for the seller’s banking information and password, which he provided, not realizing the gravity of his error.
When the funds never showed up, the seller checked his bank account and saw several thousand dollars had been withdrawn. Although embarrassed, he contacted his bank quickly, and they were able to recover the stolen funds.
