Updated: Be cautious if you’re heading out, Sechelt fire deputy chief

Everyone on the Sunshine Coast is being asked to be careful as they venture out as weather conditions have toppled trees and caused damage to roadways.

Sechelt fire deputy chief Matt Gilroy says several roads are closed due to the storm and there is no indication as to when conditions will improve.

“We’ve had a number of trees come down blocking off multiple roads,” he says. “The highway is shut down, and multiple other spots have partial lane closures due to branches and trees on the road.

“We have a number of powerlines that are hanging low, so commercial trucks and buses could potentially hit them.”

He says using extreme caution around the area since crews are working diligently to improve conditions around the affected areas.

“Watch out for downed powerlines and trees in roads,” he says. “Stuff may still be falling and there could be snags, so just be careful, and I understand it is the whole coast.”

Gilroy says areas affected include Sechelt and Halfmoon Bay.

BC Transit senior media relations manager Jamie Weiss says service is impacted on some routes, but that could change.

“Service on routes 1 and 4 are operating at limited capacity, but conditions are subject to change as crews work to clear impacted roads,” he says.

BC Hydro, Fortis and Sechelt Public Works are all working on the issue to make sure the infrastructure is clear and running smoothly.
