Safety a hot topic as school starts in Nanaimo, RCMP

Nanaimo RCMP says as the school season starts; they’re highlighting some safety tips to ensure everyone has a safe start to the academic year.

Reserve constable Gary O’Brien says the biggest concern they’ve seen each year is speed, and that is what they’re going to be targeting as students return to the classroom.

“Nanaimo RCMP will be out in full force patrolling school zones to ensure the safety of all students,” he says. “Please be responsible and reduce your speed accordingly.

“We need your help keeping our children and roads safe.”

Police add staying street smart is going to play a huge factor, and adults should make sure their children are aware of stranger danger, and other safety factors when traveling between home and school.

“Adults are reminded to make sure children never accept a ride with people they don’t know,” police say. “If a motorist stops to ask your child question, remind them to never go within two arms lengths of the vehicle.”

Children should also look both ways before crossing the street, cross only at designated areas, and make sure they’re greeted by someone they know when getting off the bus.

RCMP are also encouraging motorists to obey all traffic signage in school zones, and designated areas, and keep speed down to minimize any potential issues from occuring.
