Smoke Testing of Sanitary Sewers in Harewood This Week

Nanaimo will perform smoke testing of its sanitary sewer system in Harewood beginning Wednesday.

City crews will be conducting sanitary storm sewer testing in the neighbourhood between First and Foster Streets, and from Pine Street to Wakesiah Avenue using smoke to detect if anything other than wastewater is entering the sewer system.

Nanaimo says smoke testing is an efficient and cost-effective way to inspect the sewer system.

Using a blower, smoke will be pumped into a manhole and will escape from openings and be visible from holes in the ground or vent stacks on houses.

The city says the smoke is not toxic and harmless to humans, pets, food and materials and dissipates quickly without leaving residue or stains if it gets inside building.

Homes in the area have been notified about the smoke testing.

To prevent smoke from entering homes people are asked to make sure all traps under sinks and drains, including floor drains, have water in them by pouring 3 cups of water in them or running the water for 60 seconds.

If a home will be empty during the smoke testing, the city suggests leaving several windows partially open, especially if there are pets at home.

If the odourless smoke enters your home during testing you are asked to immediately notify the crew in the area, or contact Public Works at 250-758-5222.
