Lanztville has approved a $1.2 million water sharing deal with Nanaimo. Nanaimo Council had already given it the nod, and last night Lanztville Councillors voted 5-2 in favour.
Lantzville Mayor Jack DeJong calls it a significant breakthrough for the small community, which supplies water about 900 homes, while up to 600 others rely on water from unreliable wells.
DeJong says it’ll free up 225 connections to be used elsewhere in Lantzville. He says the cost amounts to about $6,000 per connection, which is far less than drilling a new well.
Councillor Denise Haime wanted the issue to go to a referendum but DeJong says he thinks Council was right to approve it.
DeJong says the 20-year renewable deal will benefit Nanaimo is the long run and it’s a good partnership, since Lantzville residents spend about $50,000 a year in the harbour city.
