We need to work together, says SCRD CAO

The Sunshine Coast Regional District says they have heard developers’ comments about being forced to put projects on hold.

According to a report by SCRD staff, which raised concerns among members of the development community, the current water system does not meet current fire flow standards and could impact subdivisions or rezoning or properties on the coast.

The report indicates developers said they were concerned about the impact because it could hinder, or pause, development applications.

CAO Dean McKinley says the packed gallery during the committee of the whole meeting was filled by Sunshine Coast developers to get their message and they are amending bylaws to make sure projects can go ahead.

“We have done a deep dive into our bylaws and practices with recommendations that would amend bylaws to allow us to continue working with our development communities as we work through our fire flow capacity, and the current standards,” McKinley says.

He says the SCRD needs to work with developers and not against them to address this growing concern.

“We need to work with our development community now,” he says. “We also recognize, as we move forward, we have a tremendous amount of work to do in solving these issues.”

McKinley says more information about development maps, and fire flow is expected to be released during their Feb. 5. meeting.
