BC Hydro braces for another winter blast

BC Hydro says most of the outages from yesterday’s storm have been fixed, but there are still some areas experiencing power loss.

Manager of community relations on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast Ted Olynyk says so far there are still 200 residents waiting to have power restored after the storm caused power outages to over 20,000 residents from Gabriola Island to Victoria.

Manager for community relations on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast Ted Olynyk says the system today is expected to bring a mix of everything which could cause more outages.

“This is heavy west coast snow, and when the weather warms up, you’re going to see this snow bring down branches and more trees onto lines,” he says. “This could make access a problem in some of the more remote areas.

“It will be a challenge for our crews because the areas might not be fully cleared of snow.”

According to Environment Canada, the snowfall is expected to bring up to 20 centimetres of snow to East Vancouver Island and the Malahat Highway.

They forecast the system will start this afternoon and head into tomorrow morning and could bring freezing rain as the snow transitions to rain this evening.
