Collaborative law enforcement effort ends Sechelt standoff peacefully

An incident on the Sunshine Coast that had RCMP concerned for a man’s safety ended peacefully after he made threats to harm himself and police.

Police say they responded to a call at 5682 Wharf Avenue around 7:30 a.m. on Friday. They arrived on the scene to find the man barricaded in his apartment and police add he was refusing to cooperate with law enforcement.

According to police, a collaborative effort between Sunshine Coast RCMP, crisis negotiators, and the Integrated Response Team worked for several hours to end the standoff which resulted in Wharf Avenue being restricted and some even being evacuated from the neighbouring homes.

Staff Sergeant Jenn Prunty says she is grateful for all the support shown to end this peacefully.

“We are grateful for the assistance of our community partners, including neighbours, the Sechelt Fire Department, and Emergency Health Services who stood by to ensure the safety around everyone,” she says.

The man was safely removed and was taken to hospital to be assessed.
