SD 46 elects new trustee

Tracey McClelland has been elected to represent Area 1 as their trustee for School District 46 on the Sunshine Coast.

McClelland ran against Jay O’Keefe for the position and says the race to the finish line was a great learning experience as it was her first time.

“We had a great time doing this,” she says. “It felt like a collaborative effort between the two of us. There were a lot of conversations and a friendly campaign.”

She says her main reason for venturing into this role was to make sure the small community was represented and communicated to the district.

“Electoral Area 1 has some pretty unique challenges, so I wanted to make sure there was a strong informed voice at the table,” she says.

Trustee McClelland says she is excited to get to work and her experiences can help shape the rest of the board and shape the learning environment for students.

“I have been through many of the issues that parents feel from start to finish. I feel that perspective really helps add to the picture,” she says.

McClelland says she feels there is a gap in communication in the level of understanding between parents and the district, and they [parents] feel their concerns aren’t being heard.

The school district is currently working to build a new strategic plan.
