Campfires will not be allowed in the Sunshine Coast Forest District starting Thursday at noon.
The announcement from the Coastal Fire Centre extends the prohibition already in place on Vancouver Island, from Gibsons up to and north of Powell River. They say it is to prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.
The ban also includes tikis and similar types of torches and chimineas. It will be in effect until Oct. 31 or until the order is rescinded.
Category 2 and 3 fires will still be prohibited and include fireworks, sky lanterns and burn barrels. However, the Coastal Fire Centre says the use of outdoor stoves is not prohibited as long as they are CSA or ULC-rated and have a flame smaller than 15 centimetres.
They remind you that anyone who lights, fuels or uses an open fire during a prohibition could be issued a $1,150 fine or a $100,000 fine or jail sentence if convicted in court.
To report a wildfire, you are asked to call 1 800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cell phone.
