State of Local Emergency extended again for Sunshine Coast

The state of local emergency has been extended until November 21st.

Due to freezing conditions at Chapman Lake, the watershed is still not done recharging. As of yesterday, just over 200 litres per second was flowing in the lower reach of the Creek.

Usually at this time of the year, creek flows can be up to 1,500 litres per second.

Until the entire watershed receives a lot of rain and Chapman Lake fills considerably, Stage 4 Water Regulations will remain in place. Rain has been forecasted next week, and is hoped to provide short-term improvement.

The emergency water supply from the Town of Gibsons can also be activated if required. If there is a substantial decline in supply through Chapman Creek, the SCRD may bring other water sources such as Grey Creek or Trout Lake online. A boil water advisory would be issued for residences that are serviced by those sources if they’re brought online.

Work is continuing at the Church Road Well Field site as staff work to bring it online.

The SCRD will be hosting an information session for businesses tomorrow focused on how businesses can help the water supply situation through conservation. It will also serve to give a sense of what the outlook is like on current supply.
