It’s a decision that is bound to upset the masses.
Sechelt council is looking at potentially dismantling the free downtown WiFi network and re-purpose that hardware to create “hot spots” in District buildings.
The free downtown service was established back in 2014 by the now-defunct Sechelt Innovations Limited economic development company.
A report indicates that keeping the downtown WiFi would cost about $7,000 dollars while finding this alternate use for the equipment would cost the district $750 dollars annually.
The Committee of the Whole voted to recommend the Cowrie Street network be disabled and create hot spots instead after the Labour Day weekend.
The downtown WiFi would remain active until then.
