The Sechelt Fire Department was called to a blaze around 4 this morning (Thurs).
Fire chief Trevor Pike says the fire started in a planter outside a suite on the second floor of the building in the 4700 block of the Sunshine Coast Highway in the Pier 17 building in Davis Bay.
The planter, “Was full of deep peat and moss and roots. The cigarette butt smoldered away inside the box from anywhere from four hours to maybe, two days. Once it got enough oxygen it spread up the post and into the roof and attic where it was suppressed by the sprinkler system.”
There were no injuries.
Pike says the business immediately below the residential unit has some water damage and the residential unit will have to be gutted and rebuilt.
Three tenants from the suite have been displaced.
26 firefighters responded to the blaze along with 6 apparatus.
