The Town of Gibsons has launched an alternative approval process to undertake upgrades to the Prowse Road lift station.
It’s going to cost one point 7-3 million dollars and the Town does not have money in the capital reserve to do the work.
Officials say staff tried to get grant funding for the project but has not been successful.
The Prowse Road Lift Station pumps sewage from the eastern portion of the town, or about 40 per cent of the population, that can’t drain by gravity and from there it’s pumped to the wastewater plant for treatment.
It was constructed in 1972 and the upgrades are considered critical in order to keep it working reliably.
Before Gibsons can borrow the money for the project, the Town must allow electors to indicate they are against the proposal.
Those who agree with the plan don’t need to do anything.
The process takes between four and six months and construction of the upgrades is expected to begin soon after that.
