Last year, 131 B.C. workers died from a workplace injury or disease.
Across Canada, April 28th has been designated the Day of Mourning.
Workers, families, employers, and communities will come together at ceremonies held around the province to remember those who have lost their lives to work-related incidents or occupational disease.
In Sechelt, the Sunshine Coast Labour Council is hosting a ceremony at the Seaside Centre beginning at 10:55.
Last year a plaque was installed at the base of the flagpole in Spirit Square next to the Seaside Centre.
Edward Erickson is the President of the Sunshine Coast Labour Council and said it’s an important day for many people, including himself.
“This is an emotional time for me too because my youngest brother died in the workplace 31 years ago. When that plaque was put there I thought, well here’s a place, when I think of my brother, I can come to where I can remember him and remember the past and I’m thinking it’s probably the same for a lot of people. They are the ones that are left behind. They suffer in silence.”
In Gibsons, the ceremony will be held in Dougall Park at 11.
