Federal government officials will be in West Vancouver tomorrow morning (Wed) for an announcement regarding glass sponge reefs in Howe Sound.
Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, and Pamela Goldsmith-Jones, MP for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, will announce measures to protect the newly discovered reefs.
Glass sponge reefs are unique to the waters of the Pacific Northwest and the Howe Sound reefs are some of the most biologically productive found to date.
The federal government says their protection is an important step towards Canada’s commitment to reach its conservation targets of protecting 10 per cent of marine areas by 2020.
