Living without the warmth and safety of a home is difficult to imagine, and even more so during the coldest days of the year.
The Coldest Night of the Year Walks are taking place this Saturday evening across the country.
Nanaimo will be participating for the 8th year in a row with registration at the John Barsby Community School at 4.
There will also be a walk in Oceanside, with registration at the Knox United Church beginning at 4.
Both events are hosted by the Island Crisis Care Society and Corrie Corfield, Resource Development Coordinator said the funds raised are put to good use.
“We have a lot of programs including Samaritan’s House, which is the only women’s shelter in Nanaimo and we’ve got some other outreach like sobering beds and different housing situations for folks in need. In Oceanside money raised in the event is actually going to our Oceanside outreach program.”
Corfield said, despite the cold weather, at 217, there are more walkers signed up for the Nanaimo walk than ever before.
Oceanside has about 100 signed up.
