A Nanaimo canine team was successful in arresting a suspect following a two-hour track.
It began Saturday around 5:30 in the afternoon when the owners of a cabin at Deadwood Creek Campsite, near Nanaimo Lakes Road, found a man and woman in their cabin.
The cabin owners decided to walk them to the main gate to wait for the police but the 39-year-old man pulled out a can of pepper spray and deployed it at the two men.
When RCMP arrived the 29-year-old woman was taken into custody but the man had fled on foot.
The two police officers, the police dog, along with additional officers from Nanaimo and Nanaimo Search and Rescue were called to assist in the search for the suspect.
After two hours through deep snow and brush in mountainous terrain, the police dog and his handler were able to locate the suspect who suffered several dog bites, and was arrested.
He’s facing two counts of assault with a weapon and break and enter.
