Nanaimo RCMP open house kicks off National Police Week

Nanaimo RCMP kicked off National Police Week with an open house, showing off their tactical vehicles, mobile forensic lab, motorcycles and flipping burgers to raise money for Crime Stoppers.

Constable Gary O’Brien says the Nanaimo detachement is the biggest on the Island, and the centre for a lot of the services other areas draw on.

RCMP throughout the province are also using National Police Week to highlight the drop in crime rates. Violent crime is down about 8 per cent and property crime is down about 5 per cent.

Nanaimo RCMP commander, Superintendent Mark Fisher, is going to be at Nanaimo City Council Monday to lay out their priorities for the coming year.
