The long weekend is here and the Sechelt Fire Department wants to remind the public of the rules around campfires and fireworks.
Matt Gilroy, the department’s Fire Prevention Officer explains what the rules are when it comes to campfires.
For camp and beach fires, you’re allowed to have a fire that’s no bigger than 1 metre by 1 metre in height and width.
For Sechelt residents who might be tempted to set off fireworks as there won’t be any at the Canada Day celebrations, Gilroy says that’s against the rules and you should avoid doing that.
The rules with the use of fireworks in the Nanaimo area can be confusing.
Tom Armet, the RDN’s manager of building and bylaw services says from the area south of the Nanaimo City boundary to the southern boundary of the RDN, just south of the airport at Cassidy, the use of fireworks is prohibited, except around Halloween, as per the Provincial Fireworks Act…..
Those four municipalities are Nanaimo, Parksville, Lantzville and Qualicum.
The sale, possession, and use of fireworks are banned in the City of Nanaimo and Parksville.
You need a permit in Lantzville and you can ask for a permit in Qualicum Beach, otherwise, fireworks are not allowed except on Halloween.
