The Sechelt Fire Department wants to make sure the public is updated on the rules with fireworks and campfires for this long weekend.
Matt Gilroy, the department’s Fire Prevention Officer says campfire are allowed but there are some restrictions.
Gilroy says if you plan on having that fire, you should have a water supply on hand and as well as a shovel in case the fire gets out of control and you need to put it out.For Canada Day there won’t be any fireworks for the celebration and it’s illegal for Sechelt to set off fireworks of their own.
The rules with regards to using fireworks in the Nanaimo area can be confusing.
Tom Armet, the RDN’s manager of building and bylaw services says from the area south of the Nanaimo City boundary to the southern boundary of the RDN, just south of the airport at Cassidy, the use of fireworks is prohibited, except around Halloween, as per the Provincial Fireworks Act…..
Those four municipalities are Nanaimo, Parksville, Lantzville, and Qualicum.
The sale, possession, and use of fireworks are banned in the City of Nanaimo and Parksville.
You need a permit in Lantzville and you can ask for a permit in Qualicum Beach, otherwise, fireworks are not allowed except on Halloween.
