Gibsons concerned about plans to drill into aquifer

The Town of Gibsons feels it wouldn’t sustainable or responsible for the Sunshine Coast Regional District to draw from the town’s aquifer unless there is a plan in place.
Councillor Silas White says they want to work with the SCRD but they believe a groundwater management zone and plan among the two governments would need to be in place before going forward with this partnership.

He adds, the town has spent millions on an aquifer mapping study and not being able to know whether the town’s aquifer can sustain the demands of both the SCRD and the town throws their plans for the future out the window.

White says the town is waiting to hear back from the Province about their water license application.

White says if SCRD Directors truly support the town’s long-term efforts to sustainably protect and manage our drinking water, they should be supporting this application.

The Town also has indicated their plans to draw more water from its own aquifer in order to serve zone 3 in Gibsons. If that happens, then zone 3 would no longer be dependant on SCRD water.
