National Day of Mourning events on the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island

Two ceremonies are being organized on the Sunshine Coast for National Day of Mourning tomorrow. (Sat)

Both events are being put on by the Sunshine Coast Labour Council and local officials, as well and first responders will be in attendance.

Donna Thomas says it’s important for the community to show up and show their support for a ceremony like this.

The Gibsons event is happening at Dougall Park and the Sechelt event is taking place at Seaside Centre.

Both events will begin at 11.

According to Worksafe B.C., in a recent three-week period, 11 workers in British Columbia died while at work and those deaths were not isolated to a specific industry or workplace.
Ellen Oxman of the Nanaimo/Duncan and District Labour Council says last year 158 workers died as a result of their work in B.C…….
The bulk of the work related deaths, at 43, happened within the category of general construction and there were 6 young workers killed while on the job.
There was one work related death in Nanaimo in 2017 and one on the Sunshine Coast.
The Nanaimo/Duncan and District Labour Council will be hosting an event in the Harbour City tomorrow (Sat) at the Pioneer Waterfront Plaza beginning at one o’clock.
