Movement at the top for City and RDN

Tracy Samra has been appointed as Nanaimo’s Interim City Manager for six months, while the search continues for a permanent replacement for the outgoing Ted Swabey

Samra is a senior administrator, consultant and lawyer with more than 19 years of experience working in the federal, provincial and Aboriginal public sectors.

Samra previously served as Nanaimo’s legislative services manager but went on leave in 2013.

She’ll start her new job November 19th.

And Regional District of Nanaimo CAO Paul Thorkelsson has announced he’ll step down December 9th.

“Paul has provided exceptional service during his nine years with the RDN,” say Deputy Chair Colin Haime. “He will be missed for his strategic mind, his dedication and his commitment to enhancing partner relations across the region. We are sad to see him go, but we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Thorkelsson became CAO in 2012, after serving as the RDN’s General Manager of Strategic & Community Development and a Manager of Building Inspection for the City of Nanaimo.

“My nine years with the RDN and especially these last three years as CAO have been extremely fulfilling,” say Thorkelsson. “The projects I’ve worked on have been fascinating and the people I’ve had the honour to work with have been wonderful. I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to work for this amazing organization and all the opportunities that have come with it.”
