Scooter thieves targeting Nanaimo

RCMP in Nanaimo say they’re seeing an unusual spike in scooter thefts.

Constable Gary O’Brien says 13 smaller style gas and electric scooters have been stolen since May 10th, mostly downtown and in University Heights.

The May 10th theft was on MacDonald’s Rd, near the Nanaimo River.

The others were:

June 10-Dufferin Crescent
June 20 and Oct 18- Haliburton St
June 9, Oct 12 and Oct 29- Prideaux St and Hecate St
Sept 16, Oct 11 and Nov 2- Wakesiah Avenue and University Crescent
Oct 19 and Nov 1- Estevan and Terminal Ave

O’Brien says some of the thefts may be linked.

“To date, several persons of interest have been identified in the thefts but no arrests have been made”, he says.

O’Brien says the smaller type of scooters need to be protected the same way you protect a bicycle. He says riders should make sure their machines are locked and chained, even if they’re only leaving them for short while.  He also recommends owners have a picture and a record of the serial number.
