The District of Sechelt is applying for a big grant on behalf of the Sunshine Coast’s “Seniors Planning Table”.
The group is hoping to get 20-thousand dollars from BC’s Age Friendly Community program.
Past grants under the Age Friendly Community program have be used for a survey of seniors in Sechelt, creation of accessible and adaptable design guidelines for home builders, and putting together a guide to resources for seniors.
Sue Jackel of the Seniors Planning Table told council recently it’s a good time to take a look at the big picture.
“We’re thinking that what we really should do is take a step back and try to envisage a bigger plan,” she says. “Have a framework, have priorities, have some timelines and some implementation steps.”
Jackel also says a grant would allow them to craft the strategy and look a little deeper at some of the issues, like homelessness among seniors, where there isn’t a lot of data to work with.
Jackel also told Councillors that some time down the road they’d also like to see Sechelt bring a “social planner” on board. Several communities in the province, including Nanaimo, already have one.
