Colliery Dam workers met by protesters, including 3 chained to a tree

Trees were supposed to start coming down Tuesday morning in Nanaimo’s Colliery Dam Park to make way for a new spillway.

Coast FM’s Hilary Eastmure has been at the Park, where opponents have gathered to try to block the work.

The City says it wants protesters to stick to a designated area set up in a parking lot near the lower dam, by the washroom building.

These protesters chained themselves to a tree early Tuesday morning, they’ve since been joined by about 2 dozen others.

Protesters were told by bylaw officers at around 9:15am Tuesday they had one hour to leave the work zone or face fines, and possible arrest if they still refused after being ticketed.
