Trees were supposed to start coming down Tuesday morning in Nanaimo’s Colliery Dam Park to make way for a new spillway.
Coast FM’s Hilary Eastmure has been at the Park, where opponents have gathered to try to block the work.
The City says it wants protesters to stick to a designated area set up in a parking lot near the lower dam, by the washroom building.
These protesters chained themselves to a tree early Tuesday morning, they’ve since been joined by about 2 dozen others.
Protesters were told by bylaw officers at around 9:15am Tuesday they had one hour to leave the work zone or face fines, and possible arrest if they still refused after being ticketed.
