SCRD water users close, but not quite hitting Stage 4 target

It’s been a week since the Sunshine Coast Regional District went to Stage 4 water restrictions across most of its system, and they’re urging people to cut back as much as possible.

The new goal is less than 10 million litres a day, but consumption up to Wednesday has been averaging 10.8

SCRD officials say the remaining capacity at Chapman and Edwards Lakes will be used up by mid to late September without rain.

They’re also getting an emergency back-up ready to go by September.

It involves a temporary system to draw water from the lower reaches of Chapman Lake, and if needed Trout Lake in Halfmoon Bay.

The SCRD says, “Chapman Lake is 32 metres deep and we currently only have access to the top 3 metres which is equivalent to 21% of the lake volume.  We have obtained First Nations support, and Provincial approvals are being processed for the siphon system.

The good news is the systems from Pender Harbour north still have enough capacity to withstand the drought.
