The Town of Gibsons is moving toward public hearings as early as September on a couple of controversial waterfront developments… and some Councillors are hoping the August break brings a change of tone.
The issue came up after sharp comments from a member of the public about Councillor Silas White’s decision to pull out of votes on the George Hotel proposal – citing a potential conflict because it’s close to his property.
Someone else noted that there also seems to be more nastiness around local politics on social media.
Councillor Charlene San Jenko says it’s time for “personal” leadership.
Councillor Jeremy Valeriote agrees the break could give everyone a little time to reflect.
Council gave first reading Tuesday night to bylaws for the Seaglass condominiums on Marine Drive.
The George Hotel is awaiting second reading, but it was still on the agenda as Councillors voted to approve a permit allowing the developers to have an info centre on the site. They also heard a report from planning staff and lawyers that earlier votes where White did participate do not have to be reviewed because his vote wouldn’t have been decisive.
