Residents of a small island at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast Regional District say it’s time to end their relationship and take up with the neighbouring Powell River RD.
Ron Woznow says for most Hardy Islanders their business and social connections are with Powell River, and it’s easier to get to by boat.
He says it’s a long haul to the Sunshine Coast, and pretty complicated if you want to use BC Ferries
Woznow says that isolation also makes it hard to participate in local government.
He says when Regional Districts were first created the province set up a process to changes like the one they’re looking for, and after years of talking about it Hardy Islanders have taken the first step.
They’ve written SCRD Chair Garry Nohr. If the SCRD agrees to start the process to let Hardy go it could still take up to 3 years.
