A man who lost his leg in a sawmill accident at just 18 brought an important message on workplace safety to Sunshine Coast students this week.
These days Michael Lovett helps WorkSafe BC by telling his story.
Lovett says in areas like the Sunshine Coast young people already have a good sense of how dangerous jobs like construction, or lumber milling can be. But, that’s not the case everywhere he goes.
Lovett says young people need to feel confident asking questions, and speaking out if they’re put in unsafe conditions on the job.
Lovett says even though workplace accidents are on the decline, there’s still more that can be done. The thing about accidents, he points out, is that they’re all preventable.
