Sunshine Coast RCMP say having one of the Lower Mainland District’s police dog teams around for a weekend road check proved handy.
RCMP say around 1am on January 31st a driver approaching the check point on Highway 101 in Roberts Creek veered suddenly onto the shoulder, got out of the car and ran off into the woods.
The dog, Drago, and her handler manged to find the man hiding on the banks of a creek.
The 32 year old from Gibsons was arrested, and RCMP say they seized marihuana, and impounded the vehicle. They also say the man was driving without a valid license.
“This is a great example of how having a specialty service such as a police dog can assist us in ways that humans alone could not do; in this case tracking a scent into a dark forest,” says Cst. Harrison Mohr. “The Sunshine Coast benefits from this integrated team, as this service is available to our community and across the RCMP Lower Mainland District when needed. We were fortunate to have Drago with us that evening.”
